KUMAON HIMALAYAS

The Kumaon Himalayas lie next to the Garhwal region and are situated on the Great Himalayan Range. Kumaon is often confused with the Garhwal region itself. Kumaon comprises the three hill districts of Nainital, Almorah and Pithoragarh.

Kulu - Places of Interest

Kulu is the valley of the Upper Beas. One of the major western Himalayan rivers, the Beas, however, does not cut across the main range and has a relatively shorter high mountain run. It's large catchement area though, has given rise to some of the most extensive temperate forests in the western Himalaya. In terms of it's physical geography also, the area has some unique characteristics.

Gori Valley - Places of Interest

The Gori(ganga) Valley offers excellent trekking and climbing opportunities. However, infrastructure is almost non-existent in this region. The road ends at Munsiari (or Munsiary), and from here one has to trek to reach Milam, which is the largest village in the Munsiari area. Incidentally, the portion of the Gori valley from Munsiari to Milam is called Johar, from the grain that is harvested in the non-trading season.

Phitoragarh - Places of Interest

The Pithoragarh District was carved out of the Almora District of Kumaon in the 1960s as a result of the Sino-Indian border dispute. The upper parts of this district lie in the rain- shadow of the main Himalayan range. This region includes the upper valley of the Goriganga (Malla Johar), the upper valley of the Dhauli (Darma and Chaudan) and the upper Kuti (Byans) valley.

Nainital

Nainital is a glittering jewel in the Himalyan necklace, blessed with scenic natural spledour and varied natural resources . Dotted with lakes , Nainital has earned the epithet of 'Lake District' of India . The most prominent of the lakes is Naini lake ringed by hills . Nainital has a varied topography . Some of the important places in the district are Nainital , Haldwani , Kaladhungi , Ramnagar , Bhowali , Ramgarh , Mukteshwar , Bhimtal , Sattal and Naukuchiatal . Nainital’s unending expense of scenic beauty is nothing short of a romance with awe-inspiring and pristine Mother nature.

Ranikhet

Ranikhet, quietly ensconced amidst pine trees with a charming background of the snow clad Himalaya, has a breathtaking scenic beauty.
